Certifications Are Not Created Equal

The organic bedding market uses certification logos as shorthand for safety. And for the average consumer, any of the major certifications provides meaningful reassurance. But for the chemically sensitive buyer, the differences between certifications are not academic. They determine whether a product is actually safe for you or merely safe for a healthy person.

GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standard)

GOTS is the most comprehensive textile certification available. It governs the entire production chain from raw material to finished product. To carry full GOTS certification, a product must contain at least 95 percent certified organic fibers. Every stage of processing, from spinning to dyeing to finishing, must meet environmental and toxicological criteria. GOTS prohibits toxic dyes, bleaches, formaldehyde-based finishes, and synthetic flame retardants. Labor standards and fair working conditions are also audited.

For the chemically sensitive buyer, GOTS is the gold standard because it addresses the entire supply chain, not just the finished product. A GOTS-certified product has been organic and chemical-controlled from the farm through the factory to your bedroom.

OEKO-TEX Standard 100

OEKO-TEX tests the finished product for over 100 harmful substances. It does not regulate how the product was made or whether the raw materials were organic. It only confirms that the final product, as delivered to you, does not contain harmful levels of specific chemicals. This includes testing for formaldehyde, pesticide residues, heavy metals, phthalates, and certain allergenic dyes.

OEKO-TEX is valuable as a safety floor. It catches problems that could arise during manufacturing even when organic materials are used. But it does not require organic raw materials, sustainable manufacturing, or ethical labor practices. A product made from conventional cotton that was chemically processed can carry OEKO-TEX certification if the final product tests clean.

MADE SAFE

MADE SAFE screens products against a list of over 6,500 substances known to be harmful: toxins, carcinogens, endocrine disruptors, heavy metals, and high-risk pesticides. It is a newer certification gaining traction in the bedding industry, particularly among brands like Avocado and Naturepedic.

MADE SAFE is a good additional layer of verification but it tests for known harmful substances rather than auditing the full production process. It is possible for a product to be MADE SAFE certified while using some synthetic materials that are technically non-toxic but still problematic for the chemically sensitive.

GREENGUARD Gold

GREENGUARD Gold certifies low chemical emissions (VOCs). It is primarily an indoor air quality certification. For the chemically sensitive buyer, GREENGUARD Gold on a mattress means it has been tested for low off-gassing, which is relevant and helpful. However, it does not address organic content, manufacturing processes, or the full range of chemical concerns that GOTS covers.

What Holy Lamb Carries

Holy Lamb Organics holds GOTS and OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certifications, plus Green America Certification. The GOTS certification covers their organic cotton and wool processing. OEKO-TEX confirms the finished products are free of harmful substances. Green America certifies their commitment to social and environmental responsibility.

For the chemically sensitive buyer, this combination means: the raw materials are certified organic (GOTS), the finished product has been independently tested for harmful substances (OEKO-TEX), and the manufacturing facility operates under verified environmental and social standards (Green America). Combined with their chemical-free facility practices and material sensitivity kits, Holy Lamb provides the most transparent and verifiable safety profile in the organic bedding industry.
