Roasted Zizyphus (Zizyphus sativa) seed is commonly used in Chinese herbalism to promote sound sleep. It has been used for centuries to support deep sleep and to enhance sleep's health promoting functions. Roasted Zizyphus seed is a calming herbal substance, but it is not a hypnotic. It has a neutral energy and is quite mild in nature. 

Roasted Zizyphus is categorized in traditional Chinese herbalism as a heart-blood tonic. It is the most commonly used lead herb in formulas designed to help relax the mind and support sound sleep. It is especially useful for people who experience restless sleep with excessive, vivid dreams and/or nightmares.* The heart is called "the seat of Shen."
