They Are Not the Same Thing
Organic and non-GMO are used interchangeably in casual conversation, but they are different certifications that test for different things. Understanding the distinction matters when you are buying food that will sit on a shelf for a decade.
USDA Organic means the product was produced without synthetic pesticides, synthetic fertilizers, GMOs, antibiotics, or growth hormones. It covers the entire production process: how the crops were grown, what the animals were fed, how the product was processed. Annual inspections and full supply chain documentation are required.
Non-GMO Project Verified means the product has been independently tested to confirm it does not contain genetically modified organisms. It does not regulate pesticide use, fertilizer type, or any other aspect of production. A product can be Non-GMO Project Verified while still using synthetic pesticides and conventional farming methods.
CCOF (California Certified Organic Farmers) is a third-party organic certification body that is often considered more rigorous than the minimum USDA requirements. CCOF certification means the product has been audited by one of the oldest and most respected organic organizations in the country.
The hierarchy is: USDA Organic includes non-GMO by definition (GMOs are prohibited in organic production), but Non-GMO does not include organic. A product certified as both USDA Organic and Non-GMO Project Verified has been verified by two independent systems.
Why This Matters for Emergency Food
Emergency food brands use these terms liberally in marketing. Some use "natural" (which has no legal meaning). Some say "non-GMO" without carrying Non-GMO Project Verification. Some claim "made with organic ingredients" which means as little as 70 percent of ingredients are organic.
For food that you will store for years and eat during a crisis, the certifications on the label are your only guarantee. Here is what to look for: USDA Organic seal (the circular green and white logo), Non-GMO Project Verified butterfly logo, and any additional third-party certifications like CCOF.
NuManna's organic line carries all three. That is not common in the emergency food industry. It is not common in the regular food industry either.
