The pomegranates legendary history:
The pomegranate has been cultivated for more than 5000 years and is one of the oldest plants of mankind. Its native country is located in western to central Asia. It was introduced into the Roman Empire by the Phoenicians, who regarded it as a sacred plant. Even the name, Pomegranate goes back to Roman times (Latin granae = kernel, grains, Latin granatus = granular, multinucleated). Today it is often cultivated in the Mediterranean region.
During the Trojan War in Paris (son of the Trojan king Priam), presented a pomegranate to the Aphrodite. It is also a symbol of life. For this reason, segments of pomegranate have been found as burial object with Egyptian mummies. Even now it is considered as an aphrodisiac and is a component of innumerable love potions!
Recently, Japanese researchers have discovered that the pomegranate is rich in Phytoestrogens, especially in estrone. Estrone is a mildly effective estrogen, which resembles the female sex hormone.
The pomegranate is best known for it's antioxidant capacity due to it's high level of secondary plant substances such as Polyphenols (flavonoids, tannins). The antioxidant capacity of the pomegranate seed is 4479 mol te (orac value) which is 3 times higher than blueberries or green tea! The high levels of antioxidants contained in pomegranates may help the body to fight off some forms of cancers. The antioxidants help the body protect healthy cells from free radicals. Cell damage done by free radicals can in some instances lead to cancer.
