Health Benefits*:

Nutrient Dense: Pecans contain more than 19 vitamins and minerals " including vitamin A, vitamin E, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, several B vitamins and zinc. One ounce of pecans provides 10 percent of the recommended Daily Value for fiber. Pecans are also a natural, high-quality source of protein that contain very few carbohydrates and no cholesterol.Pecans are also naturally sodium-free, making them an excellent choice for those on a salt- or sodium-restricted diet. Protein: Pecans are an excellent source of protein and can easily be substituted for meat. Eating 1 ounce of pecans (or about 20 halves) is the same as eating about 2 ounces of meat but with less saturated fat and no cholesterol. Plus, nuts contain more healthful types of fats than meat does and they are cholesterol-free, so they make excellent choices over fatty meats. anti-oxidents: using a method that had been shown to be a good indicator of the total antioxidant capacity of foods called orac (oxygen radical absorbance capacity), researchers found that pecans rank highest among all nuts and are among the top category of foods to contain the highest antioxidant capacity. Adding just a handful of pecans to your diet each day may help inhibit unwanted oxidation of blood lipids, thus helping prevent coronary heart disease. Pecans contain a significant content of different forms of vitamin E " a natural antioxidant which protects blood lipids from oxidation. Oxidation of lipids in the body - a process akin to rusting " is detrimental to health. Pecans may decrease the risk of cancer, coronary heart disease, and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer 's. Weight Control: Nuts like pecans may aid in weight loss and maintenance. The some studies indicate that nut consumption may increase metabolic rates and enhance satiety. When used in conjunction with a healthy low-fat diet, nuts also offer increased flavor, palatability and texture that can lead to greater dietary compliance. Heart-Healthy Fat: Nearly 60 percent of the fats in pecans are monounsaturated and another 30 percent are polyunsaturated, leaving very little saturated fat in pecans. The unsaturated fat in pecans is heart-healthy fat. When pecans are part of the daily diet, levels of "bad" cholesterol in the blood drop. Pecans get their cholesterol-lowering ability from both the type of fat they contain and the presence of beta-sitosterol, a natural cholesterol-lowering compound. Prostate Support: The same natural compound that gives pecans its cholesterol-lowering power, has also been shown to be effective in treating the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland in men. About two ounces of pecans provides a dose of beta-sitosterol found to be effective. In addition, gamma-tocopherol, the type of vitamin E found in pecans, has the ability to kill prostate cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone. Oleic Acid: Pecans are a rich source of oleic acid, the same type of fatty acid found in olive oil. oleic acid has the ability to suppress the activity of a gene in cells thought to trigger breast cancer. A one-ounce serving of pecans provides about 25% more oleic acid than a one-tablespoon serving of olive oil.
