Glowing Beauty Tonic: Recipe by Nick Kowalski of NicksFit.com
Beauty starts with health. There is a glow and radiance that is only achieved through true wellness – we can try to cover up with cosmetics, clothes and even surgery but nothing will replace a lack of vibrant health.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the internal organs directly affect our physical beauty. Every mole, pimple, gray hair, skin tag or eye bag shows up on our face for a reason, nothing happens on accident in Mother Nature. For example, a healthy liver is a must for glowing skin. The liver is a giant filter and detoxification organ, if it cannot do it's job properly then toxins accumulate in the body, leading to hormonal imbalances that can cause acne. If enough toxins accumulate in the liver it can even turn into conditions like eczema or psoriasis, which are conditions of excess heat or liver congestion.
The kidneys also play a major role in natural beauty, as they are responsible for filtering the blood, which nourishes the hair. If the kidneys become weak then the blood can become toxic and lack minerals that would otherwise feed the hair, growing it thick, rich in color and strong.
Herbs for Beauty
The good news is nature has plenty to offer us to keep us beautiful and healthy. In fact, the foundation of natural health and beauty is to stay as close to nature as possible. Herbs are a great place to start – they contain the wisdom and healing properties of Gaia. Amongst the many, many herbs Mother Nature has to offer, there are a few that stand out. These herbs are fantastic beauty tonics that support splendor from the inside out:
•Schizandra, is an antioxidant rich, adaptogenic berry with all 5 tastes: sweet, sour, bitter, salty and pungent. It also has tons of health benefits, particularly for the skin. Intake of schizandra increases skin health with long-term consumption. It's commonly used to treatment skin disorders because of it's powerful liver tonifying benefits. Cleansing the liver of toxic congestion and excess heat is the place to begin for glowing skin. This herb neutralizes free radicals that attack the liver cells. For this reason alone it's a major anti-aging herb. I suggest taking it over a lifetime ideally but within 100 days of use your skin will catch a glow it's never seen before – you will also see improved energy!
•Pearl has been used for centuries by the oriental. Word has it that pearl is the beauty secret to the time-less beauty of oriental woman. It prevents the development of melanin, which can cause pigmentation problems of the skin like freckles, dark patches, discoloration or liver spots. It also slows and prevents aging of the skin, making it wonderful for avoiding wrinkles, saggy skin and an overall dull appearance to the skin commonly found in aged skin. Most of the benefits of pearl can be accredited to its ability to stimulate SOD (superoxide dismutase) activity as well as specific nutrients that can promote collagen production. As a tonic herb, it's best used over a long duration. This will assure gracefully aged skin that can withstand the test of time and environment.
Glowing Beauty Tonic
The most effective way to consume tonic herbs is orally, in a potently extracted form at least twice a day (three times if you're up to it!). Personally, I enjoy turning these medicinal herbs into enjoyable beverages. This way, instead of just choking down herbs, I can actually fully enjoy and ravish in the medicine these herbs have to offer. An extracted powdered version of these herbs makes the perfect, creamy and delicious beauty tonic that can be enjoyed any time of the day. Here is my Glowing Beauty Tonic, direct from my recipe book The Gourmet Foodie:
•1 cup Gynostemma Tea
•1 teaspoon Schizandra
•1 teaspoon Pearl
•1 teaspoon Lycium
•½ teaspoon Turmeric powder
•1 tablespoon coconut oil
•1 tablespoon grass-fed ghee
•12 drops of Stevia
•Boil spring water and steep Gynostemma for 10 minutes
•Remove tea bag and pour into blender
•Add herbs, fats and stevia
•Blend for about 15 seconds or until frothy and foamy
